"The clay did for him what the water could not - it drove out the demons, tamed his heart, healed him." That's what the book did to me. Ever since I started reading it, I can feel its flame, there's something magical about it. And it's not some cliché. I look for the light, I gaze at the fall's glitter, I feel the wind and enjoy the melody it creates with the branches of the trees. Now I understand why this book is so commented on. It is magic. The characters are so real, alive, feeling both cold and warmth and the reader with them. Every place described is existent in space, has color. The sky is blue, the grass is green, and the sun is yellow-orange tinged and shining brightly. I could talk a lot about the book, about Heat and Veliko, such a magical story that touches one's heart and soul, "Clay in his hands, fire in his heart, breath in his chest - that was Heat for Veliko. Fresh was he to her, already in one breath". And so the book connects with the reader, already at one breath.
The book is about love, about jealousy as a curse, about the mystical power of a master who sculpts destiny through clay. Legend has it that in the seventeenth century, the self-made potters of the small village of Businci, in the region of Trn, received the blessing of the Turkish Sultan to travel freely within the empire to sell their wares. There was so much primal power, beauty and simplicity in Busin pottery that it opened hearts and doors. So too, Clay unfolds the legend and through its pages draws you into an emotional journey that purifies the reader's mind and makes it burn. Zhara and Veliko's encounter is fiery, just like the embers, and their love is a spark. Before he meets love, all Veliko loves is clay, through clay he expresses himself and makes a miracle out of mud. When he meets Zhara he has no idea how he will leave a mark on her heart, and his own.
The names of the characters are not accidental, they are a mirror of their souls. A book's name is a word that describes emotions and events. One thing I can say for sure - it's been a long time since I read a book that literally left a mark on me. I could talk a lot about the book, but I'm of the opinion that anything I say will be small. There are some works for which words are never enough, and no matter how hard you try to convey the emotion, to tell the story, you can't do it without the person across the room reading it. I even want to tell you in a few lines the story of these two lovers who from the ashes, like a phoenix turn into something wonderful and beautiful and then it burns and again I can't find the right words. If you haven't read Clay I recommend you do, because for me Victoria Beschliyska has created a classic that I can only compare to the Ametic classics and that can make me extremely proud that there is a Bulgarian author who can affect me in this way, make me burn and not want the pages of the book to end because it brings me an indescribable ball of emotions, it tightens my throat and that is a beautiful thing.
