"The First Case of Maisie Dobbs" is the perfect crime book to grab a person, even one who is biased towards the genre. It's been a long time since I've read something so gripping that both kept my interest and I could read even while I was pubbing. Jacqueline Winspear is definitely an author who has a skillful way of approaching the reader in a way that makes you love the story.

Briefly about the story:

Maisie Dobbs started working as a maid at the age of thirteen. She had no idea then what role her employer Lady Rowan Compton would play in her life. Lady Compton's boyfriend, works as a private detective and quickly sees potential in Maisie. So he begins to help her prepare for college in Cambridge. However, the plans don't materialize. World War I breaks out and Maisie Dobbs leaves to serve at the front in France, as a nurse. After the war, ten years later, our protagonist begins her practice as a private detective. Her first case is rather trivial, but it is the one that determines much of her fate thereafter - investigating a suspected infidelity. And so begins a great adventure with forgotten ghosts peeking around the corner.

A fascinating story that makes us think about education and how through it you can rise in society for that time, something that is mentioned quite a bit in many books, and how a woman can practice a man's profession and how it affects her life and psyche. A purely human story. A real image of a woman is being built up in front of us. Even more. By the end of the story, I want to know even more about Maisie Dobbs, the woman she became because of the path she walked, the people she met, and how the folly of the warrior left more damage than we can imagine.
