I can't compare it to great works of fiction like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, but I can't deny that it ranks closely behind them. It's a very descriptive book, a bit halothic at times I'd say, but maybe that was the charm. When I started it at times I put it down because of that, but I don't regret having read it because the gist of the story was worth the time. Maybe I'm a little too old for it, or maybe I'm not. After all, I still look for the magical world of Harry 10 times a year and I long to get into Hogwarts. Still, let's not forget the fact that Pullman is a children's author. I was drawn to the combination of a children's story and carefully constructed religious and somewhat political themes. The story is quite 'shallow' on the surface, every child wants a wonder animal for a friend, but the 'depth' is very different. But it's still supposed to be a children's book, right? It's hard for me to give an accurate opinion on the book, but it certainly intrigues with a lot of questions, which I like. It makes me think. The trilogy is an impressive story, an original take on human existence.

A magical world and countless fateful decisions, as I said the dark side of the world and everything in it. Countless choices, but is the outcome one? I encourage you to find out. Either way you choose, the series or the book. Because we're not judging anyone here. Because art and story, can be conveyed in many ways and everything has its charm.
